On the 23rd and 24th of March 2010 a conference on the battle against extremism will take place in Bratislava with international participation in the scope of the Slovak Republic’s chairmanship of the Decade of Roma Inclusion for the years 2005 – 2015. During the course of the conference both domestic and foreign participants will present currently implemented programs, measures and activities in the area of the battle against extremism. Themes to be discussed in workshops include the media and extremism, the influence of the media in propagating extremism and the opportunity of the media to participate in its elimination. Also, the role of schools and educational institutions in the battle against extremism will be discussed, as will the propagating of extremism via the Internet and other informational technologies and the possibilities for limiting them and the banning of extremist symbols.
As emphasized in his own declaration on the International Day for the Elimination of All Forms of Race Discrimination, which takes place on 21 March, Slovak government vice-chairman for a Knowledge-Based Society, European affairs, Human Rights and Minorities, Dušan Čaplovič, asserted zero tolerance on the territory of the Slovak Republic towards such movements, ideas, opinions or individual which are based on the ideology of ethnic superiority, race inferiority, neo-Nazism and neofascism. At the same time he took this opportunity to demand a clear and simple refusal and clampdown on such extremist expressions in our Central European region.
The Roma Media Center (MECEM) will on the occasion of the conference in Bratislava present the documentary film Extremism – Another Angle of View, which originated in the year 2009. Co-funding comes in the scope of the Action Plan for the prevention of all forms of discrimination, racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism and other expressions of intolerance and from sources OSI.
