The future of a languageWhile 31,000 Roma children study the language in school, their parents are against any assimilation among dialects. Some call themselves Roma, while others prefer the term Gypsy. The big issue, however, is the future of the language, with more and more youngsters focusing on English rather than Romani.

Health mediatorRoma communities still have to cope with a lot of problems, that sometime differ from one area to another. There is no health education, there are no statistics related to the health conditions of the Roma people. However, the testimonies of the doctors that have been in contact with the Roma communities show that, in general, it is the lifestyle that influences the health condition. Mothers do not have IDs, therefore neither mothers, nor children have access to medical services, children are not registered, they do not receive any financial assistance, parents don’t have money for medical treatment. Many women refuse to see a doctor during pregnancy because their traditions tell them that supervising the pregnancy or weighing the future mother is bad luck for the child.

The first history of Roma people from Tismana, written by a woman from The Slum.Tismana is a small town at the edge of the Tismana Monastery, behind which it is hidden one of the darkest pages of the Roma history. For centuries, between 1600 and 1800, the monastery was one of the biggest Roma slave owners. References about Roma slave trading from those times can be found only in old documents. After many years, a local, Elena Trîncă Buzneri, decided to gather the sotries of the Roma people. She put them in the book titled „The World and Time since I’ve known them”, rounded and completed by her memories. Thus emerged the first manuscript of the history of Roma people from Tismana.

Memory under the tilt„Memory under the tilt” is the story of a Polish Gypsy who came in Romania with a caravan of carts and settled in Hunedoara County. Although he got used to the steady living and the comfort of a big house, build in the neighborhood of the Gypsy palaces from Hășdat (Hunedoara), the old man kept in his heart the memory of the nomadic life. Moreover, he rebuild, piece by piece, in one of the rooms of his big house, the cart with which he wandered more kilometers than a lot of the modern cars can go. He kept in the wagon the whole trousseau they needed on the road - pillows, blankets – it helped them sleep in the open, protected only by tilt made from fabric. In the memory of that life, the old man painted on the walls of his house scenes in which Roma women were fortunetelling for Romanian women and he carved in marble the image of his wife, near their cart and today the small statue lays in front of his house in Hunedoara.
